News from Health Center Support CHCANYS Technical Assistance & Support Requesting a CHCANYS Letter of Support for Your Grant Project To help us respond in a timely manner to the many requests we receive from health centers for our support of their applications for New Access Point funding, section 330 funding, and other grants, CHCANYS has developed a new Policy Regarding Requests for Letters of Support as well as a standardized Letter of Support Request Form. If you would like to request a letter of support from CHCANYS for your grant project, please read the policy and complete the request form at least 14 days in advance of your application due date. In addition to completing the form, you will be asked to provide some supporting documentation to help us understand your project better. All requests for letters of support are subject to review by CHCANYS staff. Uniform Data System (UDS) Training – REGISTER TODAY! December 13-14 – Rochester or December 15-16 – Manhattan (choose one of two locations) For the Agenda, Location and Registration, please click here. The target audience for this 1.5 day training is primarily fiscal staff and new fiscal directors, clinical staff responsible for clinical measure reporting (QI Directors, some Clinical site Directors and some Medical Directors), and senior staff of new FQHCs. About the UDS: The UDS is a reporting requirement for grantees of the following primary care programs administered by the BPHC, HRSA: Community Health Center, Migrant Health Center, Health Care for the Homeless, Public Housing Primary Care, and any Section 330 funded Health Center. The UDS collects basic demographic information on patients you serve (e.g. race/ethnicity and insurance status of patients, etc.). UDS data are analyzed by HRSA to ensure compliance with legislative mandates, report program accomplishments, and justify budget requests to the U.S. Congress. The UDS also helps to identify trends over time to enable HRSA to establish or expand targeted programs, identify effective services and interventions to improve access to primary health care for vulnerable populations. Empire Justice Center presents free Medicaid webinar On Monday, November 29, noon – 1:30 pm, the Empire Justice Center will present a free webinar: Helping Your Patients Access Medicaid. This training will review the contents of a tool kit prepared by Empire Justice in collaboration with Westside Health Services in Rochester, with funding from the NYS Health Foundation. Participants will learn about the public health care programs available to clinic patients, and strategies proven successful for overcoming common barriers to eligibility, such as spend down, spousal refusal and pooled trusts. The National Maternal and Child Oral Health Policy Center, partnering with the National Assembly for School-Based Health Care, recently released a new issue brief focusing on school-based oral health services. This issue brief provides state policymakers with a brief overview of School-Based Health Centers (SBHC), opportunities to address oral health in schools – including the challenges to establishing and maintaining oral health programs, and examples of innovative applications of oral health care in schools.

About the National Maternal and Child Oral Health Policy Center The National Maternal and Child Oral Health Policy Center was created in 2008 as a collaborative effort of the Children's Dental Health Project (CDHP), the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP), the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors (ASTDD), the Medicaid/SCHIP Dental Association (MSDA), and the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) with funding from the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, Department of Health and Human Services. The Policy Center promotes the understanding of effective policy options to address ongoing disparities in children’s oral health. The three-year initiative has set out to map a course for improving family oral health by building knowledge and skills of professionals with the ability to steer systems changes.
About the National Assembly on School-Based Health Care The National Assembly on School-Based Health Care (NASBHC) is the national voice for SBHCs. Founded in 1995 to promote and support the SBHC model, NASBHC’s mission is to improve the health status of children and youth by advancing and advocating for school-based health care. Built from the grassroots up by SBHC staff and sponsors, NASBHC is a true reflection of the movement it supports. We advocate for national policies, programs, and funding to expand and strengthen school-based health centers, while also supporting the movement with training and technical assistance.
NYS Health Commissioner Dr. Richard Daines presents “Responding to Childhood Obesity" On Tuesday, November 23 from 10 am to 11 am, Dr. Daines will present a webinar on Childhood Obesity. Dr. Daines has spent nearly four years at the helm of the New York State Department of Health working with the public and policy makers to address the implications of childhood obesity from the personal, health system and cost perspectives. He is a tireless proponent of a public health response to this epidemic by using public policy and education to encourage behavior change. The New York State Department of Health estimates that one in four New Yorkers under the age of 18, or approximately 1.1 million young people, is obese.
During this hour, Dr. Daines will provide an overview of childhood obesity in New York State and discuss public policy options available to help reverse the trend. Kate Breslin, President and CEO of the Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy, will moderate the conversation and entertain questions from the field in this second in a series of web conversation hosted by the New York Children’s Action Network (New York CAN). WHEN Friday, December 10, 2010 Noon - 1:30 ET SUMMARY To effectively lead a Health Center oral health program, one needs to acquire a unique set of clinical and administrative skills, as well as the vision and overall picture for program development. No matter how skilled someone is in leadership, there is always room for improvement. NNOHA recently published Chapter 2: Leadership - Becoming an Outstanding Dental Director (http://www.nnoha.org/generalpage.html) of the Operations Manual for Health Center Oral Health Programs, and recommends this chapter for new Dental Directors, experienced Dental Directors, and anyone with an interest in developing their leadership skills. The presenter, Dr. Dan Watt, has been in leadership roles for almost 50 years. This presentation will delve into leadership principles that should benefit anyone in a leadership position no matter what their level of experience. The materials presented reference some of the nation’s leading experts in leadership training, as well as drawing on the vast experiences of the presenter. Objectives: Through participating in this webinar, one should be able to:
Identify a Personal Model of Leadership and opportunities for improvement;
Identify ways to strengthen relationships with the executive team, staff and Board of Directors;
Understand the parameters of a Dental Director position;
Develop ideas for how to interact with staff;• Create a vision of how to lead;

List opportunities for positive change within the Health Center; and

About the Presenter: Dr. Watt graduated from Ohio State University in 1967. After a Navy Hospital Internship, he went to Vietnam aboard the U.S. Valle Forge. After his discharge, he formed a group practice in Reston, VA, where he performed comprehensive dentistry for 30 years. He also served 26 years in the Navy Reserve and his last duty was Commanding Officer of the largest medical unit attached to Bethesda Naval Hospital. He co-founded the International Dental Health Foundation with Dr Paul Keyes, an NIH researcher, and presented over 500 seminars in North America on Anti-infective Periodontal Therapy. Dr. Watt became Dental Director for Terry Reilly Health Services in 2005 and has been actively promoting oral health for the underserved at the community, state and national levels. He is the author of two books and numerous professional articles. 1.5 CE credits will be available for this webinar. The Big Blue Test In recognition of World Diabetes Day, the American Diabetes Association revisited the Big Blue Test, created by the Diabetes Hands Foundation (DHF). Now in its second year, its concept is to connect people from around the world to promote awareness and health. At 2 PM local time on November 14, those with diabetes were encouraged to check their blood glucose levels, exercise for fourteen minutes, check again, and share their results online at bigbluetest.org. DHF has also created a promotional video for the event.

NYS DOH Adult Hepatitis Vaccination Program All Federally Qualified Health Centers in NYS (except New York City) are eligible to enroll in the New York State Department of Health’s Adult Hepatitis Vaccination Program. Under this program, participating health care providers receive single antigen hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccines or a combination hepatitis A and B vaccine at no cost. This program’s target population is individuals over the age of 18 years without health insurance coverage and high-risk adolescents and adults (i.e., MSM, IDUs, HIV+, etc.). There is a “Hepatitis A and B Vaccination Curriculum” available through the NYS DOH, which can be used to train staff about vaccination procedures and/or it may be used as a resource to assist with development of vaccination policies and procedures. Call For Applications: The RWJF Executive Nurse Fellows program The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Executive Nurse Fellows (ENF) program is a three-year advanced leadership program for nurses who aspire to lead and shape health care locally and nationally. Fellows strengthen their leadership capacity and improve their abilities to lead teams and organizations in improving health and health care. News from Community HealthCorps CHCANYS HealthCorps Members will be attending the New York States AmeriCorps Kick off event on Friday November 19th, 2010. Members will be officially sworn into service at that time, and participate in program events and trainings sponsored by the New Yorkers Volunteer Office.
Members also participated in New York Cares day event on October 23, 2010. At this year’s event the members joined thousands of other volunteers throughout the New York City area in painting schools, neighborhood parks, and murals. This event was a neighborhood revitalization project, which transformed drab spaces into bright, colorful, inviting places for children and community members to enjoy. CHCANYS Community HealthCorps members planted tulips and other flowers and painted murals for a school in Staten Island this year.
