It includes timely updates about newly available resources, application deadlines for grants and upcoming trainings, as well as policy updates since our last contact with you. National Health Center Week National Health Center Week is just around the corner. In order for us to know what events you are planning, it is essential that you go to www.chcanys.org and click on the NHCW Resources Box on the right side of the page. There will then be a link for registering your event. Going to the NACHC page and registering your event there won't get your event listed on the CHCANYS site so you have to let both of us know.
NHCW Public Service Announcement To help you promote NHCW, CHCANYS is producing a public service announcement that promotes both health centers and the week. Please watch your e-mail for messages from our Communications Consultant, Libby Post, for more information. The spots will be produced in English and Spanish for all health centers and in Chinese for Charles B. Wang Community Health Center. NHCW Breakfast Announced The 2009 National Health Center Week Breakfast in New York City will take place on Tuesday, August 11 from 9 am to 11:30 am at Antun's Caterers, 96-43 Springfield Blvd., Queens. This year's honorees are members of Congress Hon. Michael McMahon, Hon. Gregory Meeks and Hon. Carolyn Maloney and State Senators Hon. Malcolm Smith and Hon. Thomas Duane, each of whom have made access to quality primary care a priority in their work at the Federal and State level. CHCANYS Releases NYC Budget Summary The New York City Council adopted a negotiated FY 2010 City Budget of $59.4 billion on June 19th. Because of a significant decrease in revenues due to the economic downturn, the adopted budget fills a gaping $6.6 billion deficit through a series of tax increases, job cuts and agency spending reductions among other actions. With a downturned economy as a backdrop, CHCANYS pursued an aggressive NYC healthcare agenda and achieved relative success. To read the NYC Budget Summary, click here.
Nassau County Wants to Put Patients in Charge Nassau County is looking to turn its county run health clinics into independent federally qualified health centers. CHCANYS CEO Elizabeth Swain was called for her comment on the move. Click here to read the entire article.
CHCANYS To Host Stimulus Funding Corporate Compliance and OMIG Regulations Training, September 10 & 11 SAVE THE DATE The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) has infused health centers with millions of dollars of Stimulus funds to expand the provision of primary and preventive care to additional populations. At the same time, however, the legislation creates significant risks for health centers that fail to take adequate steps to maintain compliance with ARRA's legal requirements. The training will also cover new regulations being implemented by the NYS Office of the Medicaid Inspector General on October 1. CHCANYS to Participate in Pandemic Planning Meeting in Atlanta CHCANYS has been invited to attend the Integrating Primary Care Providers into Community Pandemic Influenza Planning Stakeholder Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia this August. Held by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion (DHQP) and the Oak ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), the meeting will bring together primary care providers, subject matter experts, and other key stakeholders from across the country to engage in facilitated discussions and to ultimately produce a primary care office template for a pandemic influenza plan; a process for integrating these offices into a community pandemic influenza planning; and a planning calendar to guide healthcare providers and community planners through the methods, processes, opportunities, and challenges of utilizing primary care providers to help alleviate the surge on hospital emergency departments during an influenza pandemic.
CHCANYS will be one of three representatives for FQHC emergency preparedness activities joining between 60 and 80 subject matter experts, stakeholders from primary care offices, public health departments, emergency management agencies, federal partners, and hospital associations to address the roles they can play in an upcoming pandemic.
Nationwide Fall Flu Prevention Campaign Gears Up The Obama Administration is providing new tools to help state and local governments and America's families prepare for the fall flu season and the ongoing H1N1 flu pandemic. Stressing that preparations for a national response framework and action plan are a "shared responsibility", the Federal government is working with its federal, state, and local counterparts and urging both the medical community and individual Americans to get involved in preparations for H1N1 and the fall flu season.
Toward that end, Health and Human Services will make available preparedness grants to provide appropriate resources to state and local governments, will centralize communications about H1N1 on a new Web site www.flu.gov and will launch a new Public Service ad campaign contest to challenge Americans to come up with creative for a nationally televised PSA. New Information on Government-Wide Reports for ARRA Funds The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the Recovery, Accountability and Transparency Board have announced that webinars will be held the week of July 20, 2009 to provide information on implementing the OMB guidance on government-wide reporting requirements (those issued June 22, 2009 - Implementing Guidance for the Reports on Use of Funds Pursuant to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009). Each webinar will focus on a major section of the Guidance as well as on the technology solution.
Health centers should note that these reports are in addition to the quarterly reports that must be submitted to HRSA, the first of which were due July 10, 2009. Unlike the HRSA reports, the government-wide reports will be submitted by health centers beginning October 10, 2009.

NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to offer 100,000 coupons for fresh produce NYC DOH MH is making 100,000 Health Bucks worth $2 each available this summer and fall to be redeemed for fresh fruits and vegetables at participating farmers' markets. Every time a food stamp user spends $5 at a participating farmers' market, they can receive a $2 voucher for fruits and vegetables. To learn more, click here.
NACHC UPDATES--NEW NACHC to offer workshop on developing effective FQHC Programs and Applications NACHC will hold a two and a half day workshop on how to develop and present a program model on August 20-22 at the Hilton Chicago. This training is geared to organizations interested in forming a Federally Qualified Health Center, interested in FQHC Look-Alike designation or interested in applying for Section 330 funding as a new grantee or for continuation funding. UPCOMING MEETINGS AND TRAININGS--NEW Pilot workshop on reducing cancer disparities and promoting health equity announced.
On Thursday, August 13 from 9 am – 5 pm at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Icahn Medical Institute, a pilot workshop titled Reducing Cancer Disparities & Promoting Health Equity Among Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Populations will be presented by the American Psychological Association.This workshop will take place at 1425 Madison Avenue, New York City.The workshop will:
Describe relevant trends in professional practice for providing services to socioeconomically disadvantaged populations
Identify health disparities/inequities across the cancer continuum
Identify evidence/practice based interventions to reduce health disparities across the cancer continuum
Articulate 3 next steps to take to improve individual, organization, and community level capacities to reduce cancer health disparities among socioeconomically disadvantaged populations.

GRANTS OPPORTUNITIES-NEW Bronx Health REACH offers grants to eliminate diabetes related health disparities among NYS minorities Bronx Health REACH, a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) designated National Center of Excellence in the Elimination of Disparities (CEED), announces a request for proposals for projects which aim to eliminate diabetes related health disparities affecting African American and/or Latino populations in New York State.
Bronx Health REACH/New York CEED will award 3-4 grants of $25,000-$50,000 for a period of one year beginning October 2009. Proposals for funding are due by September 1, 2009.
