ABOUT CHCANYS

The year was 1971 and the community health care movement was just beginning. In New York, a group of dedicated community health activists created what was then innovation in health care advocacy— the Community Health Care Association of New York State (CHCANYS).

Established to give a voice to the state’s network of community health centers as leading providers of primary care, CHCANYS is now seen as one of the premiere primary care associations in the country. CHCANYS not only works to increase access for those who would otherwise go without care through advocacy and education but also creates major new programs and initiatives that showcase community health centers as centers of excellence.

CHCANYS defines new directions in primary care delivery at more than 70 federally qualified health centers with nearly 800 sites throughout the state. From clinical excellence to health information technology, from emergency preparedness to eliminating health care disparities, CHCANYS’ goal is to provide community health centers with the resources needed to provide high quality, community-based primary care to anyone in need regardless of their ability to pay.

ABOUT PRIMARY CARE ASSOCIATIONS

CHCANYS is also the oldest statewide Primary Care Association (PCA) in the U.S. PCAs are designated to serve as the major link between community health centers (CHCs), their satellite sites, the Bureau of Primary Health Care of the Department of Health and Human Services and state and local governments. PCAs provide a communication forum for providers of primary health care, relative to administrative, managerial and clinical issues. PCAs promote the provision of comprehensive, quality health care to the medically underserved as well as advocate effective solutions to guarantee that quality care is available to all regardless of their ability to pay.

WHAT COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTERS DO

CHCs are located in medically underserved areas throughout New York State. They provide high-quality, patient centered, community-based primary care to anyone who needs care, regardless of their ability to pay. CHCs provide a range of services including primary and preventive care, behavioral health services, dental care and substance abuse services in a culturally and linguistically appropriate setting.
