House to Vote on Health Center Funding Cuts Call your Representative Today!
House to Vote on $1.3 BILLION in CUTS to the Health Centers Program TOMORROW! CALL YOUR Representative TODAY!
The House is currently debating the FY2011 Continuing Resolution (HR 1) that includes $1.3 BILLION in cuts to Health Center funding and is scheduled to vote on this bill TOMORROW. We know that you are aware of the impact these cuts will have (if not, check the bottom of this email) and this is the last chance you will have to weigh in on this bill in the House. As this bill comes to a vote we need you to CALL your Representative one more time and ask them to:
1) Go to the floor and talk about their support for health centers AND 2) To continue to oppose Health Center funding cuts and Vote AGAINST the Continuing Resolution
Click the link in the upper right hand corner of this alert to enter the Grassroots Action Center and access the direct phone number for your Representative’s office. MAKE SURE to fill out a call feedback form so we know you made your call and can follow up on any information you’re able to share. If you would also like to send your Representative a message about this issue, clickhere.
While this bill is being debated the BEST way to demonstrate the broad support for Health Centers is for as many Representatives as possible to speak about the value and importance of Health Centers from the House floor. So far only a very few Representatives have mentioned Health Centers in their statements so we need you to urge YOUR Representative to talk about why cutting health Center funding is the wrong thing to do for their constituents and for the country!

NYSHealth's 2011 Special Projects Fund RFP The New York State Health Foundation's (NYSHealth's) 2011 Special Projects Fund request for proposals (RFP) invites organizations across New York State to apply for funds to improve the health of New Yorkers. Although NYSHealth's grantmaking is focused on three priority areas (expanding health insurance coverage, improving the management and prevention of diabetes, and encouraging the integration of substance use and mental health services), the 2011 Special Projects Fund is designed specifically to support projects that fall outside of those priority areas, but are consistent with NYSHealth's broad mission to improve health care in New York State. This RFP provides an opportunity for the Foundation to be responsive to the changing health care environment and ideas that emerge from the field.
Download the detailed 2011 Special Projects Fund RFP here.
Potential applicants are required to complete an online inquiry form to determine whether a proposed project fits the funding criteria. NYSHealth staff will review the inquiries on an ongoing basis and respond to potential applicants. For more information about the Special Projects Fund, please click here.

Are you looking for a Dentist, a Physician Assistant, an Internal Medicine MD, or a Nurse Practitioner who specializes in Women’s Health? Underneath the auspices of HRSA, the Bureau of Clinician Recruitment & Service (BCRS) was established in 1970 to address health disparities. It also helps underserved communities and facilities experiencing critical shortages of health care providers by recruiting and retaining clinicians through scholarship and educational loan repayment opportunities in exchange for service. HRSA is legislatively mandated to develop shortage designation criteria and use them to decide whether or not a geographic area, population group or facility is in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) or a Medically Underserved Area (MUA) or Population (MUP).
The BCRS is able to assist these underserved communities through the National Health Service Corps (NHSC). Over 30,000 clinicians have served since 1972. In 2008, 3,500 clinicians cared for 4 million patients and about half of those were in CHCs. Statistics show that half of the clinicians who serve in the NHSC go on to care about underserved people and choose to work where they are needed most.
The NHSC clinician is committed to serve one year for each year of support (usually 2-6 years) at an approved site in a high-need HPSA. These clinicians are licensed and have served a primary care residency in various specialties (family medicine, general pediatrics, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, psychiatry, general or pediatric dentistry).
There are five NHSC clinicians that need immediate re-placement:
Pediatric Dentist – NYC Area (HPSA score must be > 17)
If you have any interest in employing one of these dedicated clinicians, please contact Dr. Kameron Wells (VP, Clinical Quality Initiatives) at 212-710-3814 or kwells@chcanys.org to discuss further. In addition, if you would like to learn more about the BCRS click here, and for the NHSC click here.

Release of NYS Medicaid Update Special Edition: Prepare for HIPAA 5010 today! On January 16, 2009, the Office of the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) published a Final Rule adopting updated versions of the standards for electronic transactions previously adopted under the Administrative Simplification subtitle of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Since the mandate and subsequentimplementation of the original transactions in October 2003, industry stakeholders submitted many comments to DHHS and change requests to the Designated Standards MaintenanceOrganizations (DSMOs). This resulted in the development of updated specifications for the existing transactions, which all covered entities are mandated to implement by January 1, 2012.
