Commissioner’s Grand Rounds: Vaccine Hesitancy: An Evolving Public Health Threat (June 13, 2019) The United States is experiencing one of the largest outbreaks of measles since its elimination in 2000. The number of confirmed cases in New York State and across the nation is continuing to rise. This session expands healthcare providers' capacity to address vaccine hesitancy among patients and families. Presenters discuss the epidemiology of the measles outbreak in New York, the science underlying infectious diseases such as measles, and share their experiences engaging with vaccine hesitant patients and families.
Vaccine Myths (February 26, 2019) Dr. Denise Benkel of the Bureau of Immunization at NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene joined the CHCANYS Nursing Subcommittee for a presentation on vaccine myths and addressing parental concern about immunization safety. Dr. Benkel shared a brief history of vaccines as a public health accomplishment, information on the pervasiveness of vaccine hesitancy, eleven specific myths attributed to vaccines, and strategies for how to handle resistance.
