Preliminary NYC Budget Released updated 1.30.17 Mayor Bill de Blasio released his preliminary NYC budget for FY18 last week. Coming in at just under $85B, the mayor’s funding priorities focus on improving public safety, securing infrastructure, investing in public schools, and continued efforts to reduce homelessness and increase affordable housing. While the city is generally in good fiscal health now, the Mayor acknowledged that his proposed budget does not take into account the possible loss of federal funding that has been threatened by the new Trump administration. The Mayor’s budget also does not account for language in the NYS 2017-18 Executive Budget that would take $50M in Medicaid funds from NYC if the city isn’t able to find $100M in additional federal reimbursements. Health-related highlights in the Mayor’s proposed budget include:
$767M in aid to Health + Hospitals, which still has a $2B budget gap despite efforts to increase utilization which have been largely unsuccessful
Increase of $3.3M to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene budget, most of which will go towards expanding the Cure Violence program
Investment for a wage increase for health and human services contractors that will impact 90,000 contracted employees by FY20
