This course will provide information to participants interested in learning about the treatment of opioid dependence and, in particular, physicians who wish to
provide office-based prescriptions of the medication buprenorphine. After successfully completing the course, physicians will have fulfilled the necessary training requirement and will qualify for a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine in an office-based setting. After participating in this course, participants should be able to describe:
· General aspects of opioid pharmacology
· Pharmacological characteristics of buprenorphine and its use for opioid dependence treatment
· Different levels of treatment services
· Psychiatric and medical co-morbidity
· Confidentiality
Finally, the course will utilize case-based, small-group discussions to illustrate and elaborate upon points brought up in didactic presentations.
