Hosted by the Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA), this conference will examine the recent experiences of the health care communities in Southeast Texas and Florida during Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, as well as provide our region's health care leaders with an opportunity to reflect on progress made and remaining vulnerabilities as we approach the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. 

The conference will begin with a panel discussion on the impacts of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma on the health care sectors in affected communities. Panelists will include U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services staff who were involved in both responses, the Associate Commissioner for Regional and Local Operations from the Texas Dept. of State Health Services, and individuals directly involved in South Florida's health care sector response. The program will then pivot to statewide and city-level planning.

Representatives from NYC Emergency Management, New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, New York City Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), and NYS Dept. of Health (DOH) will discuss lessons learned from these recent experiences, key areas of focus since Hurricane Sandy, progress made, and continuing areas of concern.

The program will conclude with a health system resiliency panel. Leaders of health systems in the New York region will address the earlier presentations and discuss approaches to increasing resiliency and facilitating continuity of operations in the face of more frequent and more destructive extreme weather events.
