The Breast and Prostate Cancer Peer Education Program (BPCPEP) offers education for women age 50 and older about the importance of regular breast cancer screening, and for men age 50 and older, about the risks of prostate cancer. The program refers clients to health and community services and encourages clients to talk about screening with their health care providers. The BPCPEP provides breast and prostate cancer education to underserved populations, including those who experience barriers to health care services. Education activities are conducted by peer educators who are supervised by the program coordinator. Peer educators are trained frontline staff who are members of the priority populations who share similar social backgrounds or life experiences.
The Peer Educators provide one-on-one and group education activities to peer community groups in a variety of settings regarding the importance of breast cancer screening and prostate health. The position refers interested individuals to a health care provider for breast cancer screening or prostate cancer screening education, or, when appropriate, refers individuals to suitable community resources.
Essential Responsibilities
Conduct presentations about breast and prostate cancer to a small or large group of clients using written and visual materials, when appropriate (training on subject matter provided)
Provide referrals to clients to health care and community resources when necessary
Employ effective outreach methods and strategies to reach target populations
Motivate clients to engage in behavior change and access health services
Understand and respect cultural norms (such as language, communication styles, health beliefs and values, religion, attitudes toward government agencies, etc.) of the communities being served
Maintain written records of educational interactions, referrals, and other data required
Flexible schedule necessary for daytime/evening/weekend educational sessions within the community
Attend State DOH-sponsored trainings
Required Education/Skills/Abilities
Bilingual Spanish/English (fluent) essential
Associates degree or higher
Two or more years of experience in public health/health education
Experience facilitating conversations and group discussions
Strong oral and written communication skills
Strong interpersonal and problem solving skills
Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word/Excel/Outlook)
Ability to work independently.
Other Requirements
Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to travel throughout the service area
Ability to lift 30 lbs.
