Position Description:
  • Provides medical treatment and advice to patients of all groups, including office gynecology. Elicits history, examines patients, order, performs and interpret laboratory and x-ray examinations, diagnoses and performs or order necessary treatment.
  • Examines patient, performs comprehensive physical examination, and compiles patient medical data, including health history and results of physical examination.
  • Administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiogram, and laboratory tests, and interprets test results for deviations from normal.
  • Performs therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care, and managing infection.
  • Develops and implements patient management plans, records progress notes, and assists in provision of continuity of care.
  • Instructs and counsels patients regarding compliance with prescribed therapeutic regimens, normal growth and development, family planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance.
  • The incumbent acts on his or her own judgment to provide medical services to individuals. This includes being on call evening hours and weekends.
  • Perform physical examination and obtains and records a patient and family health history.
    • Makes physical assessments, diagnosis and initiates plan for treatment including prescription medication as approved by existing state law.
    • Manages chronic health problems.
    • Interprets selected laboratory findings.
    • Provides emergency treatment as appropriate and necessary.
    • Performs under appropriate guidance procedures including but not limited to:Promotes continuity of patient care by relevant counseling guidance, health instruction follow-up visits or telephone contact.
      • Recognizes mental deviation from normal; initiates arrangements for treatment of psychiatric and psychosocial problems.
      • Establishes a collaborative relationship with referral physician where roles and responsibilities are clearly delineated and agreed upon
      • Interprets the role of the Nurse Practitioner to the community.
      • Participates in the development of protocols and performance improvement procedures.
      • Attends mandated meetings

Special Instructions:

Qualifications: Graduated from an approved Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Training Program; Two or more years of experience is preferred; NPs must be certified by the ANCC or PNCB. 

 Clinical duties will include: performing physical exams, administration of vaccines and medications, reproductive health counseling and services, care for asthmatic and diabetic patients, acute visits, obesity diagnosis and management, and mental health screening and referral.

 Administrative duties will include: management of the clinic team (see above), attendance at meetings with school officials, participation in Performance Improvement projects, mandatory clinical trainings, and weekly departmental meetings.

Morris Heights Health Center (MHHC) is seeking experienced and energetic Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants to provide comprehensive medical services to students in school-based clinics.

Since 1981, Morris Heights Health Center (MHHC) has a record of distinction as the major provider of health care to Morris Heights and its surrounding areas in the Bronx.  Our school based program encompasses 20 public schools throughout the Bronx, where high quality health care is delivered to students in elementary, middle and high schools. Each clinic is staffed with a full time Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant, along with a full time Social Worker and Medical Assistant and various other part time support staff, such as Health Educators, administrative assistants and dental providers. Supervising Physicians collaborate with the school-based providers to ensure that a high standard of care is maintained at all sites.

 High School Providers will participate in our Long Acting Reversible Contraception Program, and will be trained to place IUDs and Implants.
