Today is Public Housing Health Centers Day 2014. Please join CHCANYS in celebrating the work of FQHCs throughout New York State and the nation that provide residents of public housing with increased access to comprehensive primary health care services.
The mission of the Public Housing Primary Care (PHPC) program is to provide residents of public housing with increased access to comprehensive primary health care services through the direct provision of health promotion and disease prevention activities and primary health care services. Services are provided on the premises of public housing developments or at other locations immediately accessible to residents of public housing.
In urban and rural communities, from high rises to scattered sites and mixed income models, public housing exists in many different forms. FQHCs serving public housing residents have expanded significantly in recent years, serving over 227,000 unique patients nationwide in 2013. Despite the unique challenges they face, these FQHCs remain committed to adaptation and improvement of their services to meet the complex needs of their patients. Expansion of integrated behavioral health is one such strategy. Earlier this summer, 23 PCPH grantees were awarded funds by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in order to expand behavioral health services through best practices - an exciting next step for FQHCs in adapting their comprehensive care model to fit the needs of the communities they serve.
