All July events will be held at The Greater Hudson Valley Family Health Center’s Kaplan Family Pavilion, 147 Lake St., Newburgh, NY 12550.
Thursdays, May 9 – August 1: Living Well with Diabetes This workshop helps patients improve their ability to manage diabetes and to better control their symptoms through diet, physical activity, stress management, and ongoing self-care. Each session includes a consultation with a physician and registered dietitian as well as healthy snacks and recipes. This program also is offered in Spanish. To register, call 563-8000 (x1260).
Mondays, July 1 – 29: Wellness Monday: Reduce Stress and Increase Physical Strength and Flexibility Wellness Mondays are held by the health center in partnership with Independent Living, Inc. This month Wellness Monday focuses on Qigong for Health and Longevity (5:30 -6:30 p.m.) as well as Tai Chi (6:45-7:45 p.m.) A $5 donation is requested, but not required to participate. Tuesdays, July 9 – July 30: Smoking Cessation Support This series helps tobacco users learn about the health benefits of quitting. This program, which takes place from 1 – 2 p.m., is open to the public. To register, call (845) 563-8000 (x 1260). This program also is offered in Spanish.
Wednesdays, July 10 – August 28: Fit for Life: Childhood Weight Control Program This eight-week weight control program is for patients, ages 7 to 12 years old, and their families. It includes fun, child-centered physical activity, education about healthy living, and a healthy snack. Participants will see a physician for a short consultation during each session. July 9; July 19; July 26; July 31: VOICES, a reproductive health education program This event is a free, film-based program where participants will view a short video followed by discussion that will help them learn important information and gain practical skills about HIV, STIs, and safer sex. A $25 gift card will be awarded to those who complete the program! VOICES for men is on Tuesday, July 9, 6 – 8 p.m.; for girls ages 16-19 on Friday, July 19; 4:30 – 6 p.m.; for women on Wednesday, July 31, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.; and boys ages 16-19 on Friday, July 26; 4 – 6 p.m. Call (845) 563-8000 (x 1059)to register.
Mondays and Thursdays, July 11 – 29; August 1: Strengthening Families Program A free program from 5:45 – 8:45 p.m. offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension Orange County for caregivers and parents to attend with their children ages 10-14 years old. The program includes: fun youth and family activities, light family meals (sorry no childcare), ways to strengthen family communication, understanding of why preteens/teens act the way they do, how to work through conflict together, and how to avoid problems with alcohol and other drugs.
