On November 7, 2013,U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced $2,762,501 in awards under the Affordable Care Act to support the establishment of 5 new health service delivery sites in New York State, which will serve a proposed additional 29,493 patients. A total of $150 million was granted to health centers across the United States in the form of 236 awards.
The awards are well-timed; over 1 million previously uninsured New Yorkers are expected to sign up for health coverage via the recently-launched NY State of Health marketplace, resulting in an increased demand for services. As community-based and patient-directed organizations, health centers are well positioned to be responsive to the specific health care needs of their communities.
