It’s not too late to register for the NEW YORK STATE UDS TRAINING: December 13 and 14 in Rochester, NY or December 15 and 16 in New York City. To register, please click here! This 1.5 day training is directed at fiscal staff, including new fiscal directors, clinical staff responsible for clinical measure reporting (e.g. QI Directors, Clinical site Directors or Medical Directors), and senior staff of new FQHCs. This year’s training will focus on changes in the financial tables and clinical measures. Day 2 of training (a half-day session) will be dedicated to a demonstration of the UDS Mapper and advanced uses of the UDS as a management tool. About the Uniform Data System (UDS): The UDS collects basic demographic information on the patients you serve (e.g. race/ethnicity and insurance status of patients, etc.) All grantees of BPHC-administered Section 330 primary care programs (including Community Health Center, Migrant Health Center, Health Care for the Homeless and Public Housing Primary Care) are required under the terms of their grant to report UDS data, which then are analyzed by HRSA to ensure compliance with legislative mandates, report program accomplishments, and justify budget requests to the U.S. Congress. The UDS also helps HRSA identify trends over time and establish or expand targeted programs and identify effective services and interventions to improve access to primary health care for vulnerable populations.
News from Health Center Support Empire Justice Center Reschedules Medicaid webinar to Thursday December 9th 12:00-1:30. The Empire Justice Center will present a free webinar: Helping Your Patients Access Medicaid on December 9 from noon – 1:30 p.m. This training will review the contents of a tool kit prepared by Empire Justice in collaboration with Westside Health Services in Rochester, with funding from the NYS Health Foundation. Participants will learn about the public health care programs available to clinic patients, and strategies proven successful for overcoming common barriers to eligibility, such as spend down, spousal refusal and pooled trusts. Open Enrollment for 2011 Medicare Prescription Drug and Health Plans Is Now Open The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is encouraging all Medicare beneficiaries to take advantage of the annual Open Enrollment period to make sure they have the best coverage available to meet their health care needs in 2011. The Medicare Open Enrollment Period this year began on November 15th and runs through December 31st. During the Open Enrollment period, current or newly eligible Medicare beneficiaries, including people with original Medicare, can review current health and prescription drug coverage, compare health and drug plan options available in their area, and choose coverage that best meet their needs.
The National Health Services Corp Loan Repayment Application Cycle Now Open We hope that you will help us spread the word about the program and the exciting changes being implemented this year including:
Increase in Financial Support. The Corps loan repayment program now begins with an initial award of up to $60,000 for two years of service. You may receive up to $170,000 in loan repayment for completing a five-year service commitment and, with continued service, may be able to pay off all eligible student loans.
More Flexible Options to Complete Your Service. The loan repayment program now offers three options for fulfilling your service obligation - a two-year full-time contract, a four-year half-time contract, and a two-year half-time contract.
Increased Credit for Teaching. The service obligation for clinical practice hours has been updated to include a 20 percent credit for teaching and a 50 percent credit for teaching at a Teaching Health Center.

To effectively lead a Health Center oral health program, one needs to acquire a unique set of clinical and administrative skills, as well as the vision and overall picture for program development. No matter how skilled someone is in leadership, there is always room for improvement. NNOHA recently published Chapter 2: Leadership - Becoming an Outstanding Dental Director (http://www.nnoha.org/generalpage.html) of the Operations Manual for Health Center Oral Health Programs, and recommends this chapter for new Dental Directors, experienced Dental Directors, and anyone with an interest in developing their leadership skills. The presenter, Dr. Dan Watt, has been in leadership roles for almost 50 years. This presentation will delve into leadership principles that should benefit anyone in a leadership position no matter what their level of experience. The materials presented reference some of the nation’s leading experts in leadership training, as well as drawing on the vast experiences of the presenter.
Objectives: Through participating in this webinar, one should be able to:
Identify a Personal Model of Leadership and opportunities for improvement;
Identify ways to strengthen relationships with the executive team, staff and Board of Directors;
Understand the parameters of a Dental Director position;
Develop ideas for how to interact with staff;• Create a vision of how to lead;
Develop a professional vision of the dental department;
List opportunities for positive change within the Health Center; and
Meet social responsibilities.
About the Presenter: Dr. Watt graduated from Ohio State University in 1967. After a Navy Hospital Internship, he went to Vietnam aboard the U.S. Valle Forge. After his discharge, he formed a group practice in Reston, VA, where he performed comprehensive dentistry for 30 years. He also served 26 years in the Navy Reserve and his last duty was Commanding Officer of the largest medical unit attached to Bethesda Naval Hospital. He co-founded the International Dental Health Foundation with Dr Paul Keyes, an NIH researcher, and presented over 500 seminars in North America on Anti-infective Periodontal Therapy. Dr. Watt became Dental Director for Terry Reilly Health Services in 2005 and has been actively promoting oral health for the underserved at the community, state and national levels. He is the author of two books and numerous professional articles.

NYS DOH Adult Hepatitis Vaccination Program All Federally Qualified Health Centers in NYS (except New York City) are eligible to enroll in the New York State Department of Health’s Adult Hepatitis Vaccination Program. Under this program, participating health care providers receive single antigen hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccines or a combination hepatitis A and B vaccine at no cost. This program’s target population is individuals over the age of 18 years without health insurance coverage and high-risk adolescents and adults (i.e., MSM, IDUs, HIV+, etc.). There is a “Hepatitis A and B Vaccination Curriculum” available through the NYS DOH, which can be used to train staff about vaccination procedures and/or it may be used as a resource to assist with development of vaccination policies and procedures.

Call For Applications: The RWJF Executive Nurse Fellows program The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Executive Nurse Fellows (ENF) program is a three-year advanced leadership program for nurses who aspire to lead and shape health care locally and nationally. Fellows strengthen their leadership capacity and improve their abilities to lead teams and organizations in improving health and health care. The call for applications for the 2011 cohort was released on Sept.15th! Check it out on the new ENF website - www.executivenursefellows.org. Each year the RWJF ENF program selects a cohort of up to 20 highly qualified nurses in senior executive positions to participate in the three-year fellowship.

CONFERENCE: Integrating Screening for Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassemia into Pre-Conception Health Care Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassemia present unique challenges to individuals, families and heath care providers.
