CHCANYS UPDATE Region II Conference: Register Today The New Jersey Primary Care Association (NJPCA) hosts this year's Region II primary care conference for health centers in New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The Patient-Centered Medical Home Program will provide enhanced Medicaid payments to health centers certified by the Commissioner of Health as medical homes. News from Clinical Quality Initiatives An Invitation from DOHMH and American Cancer Society: CME Opportunity Join Dr. Richard Rosenberg, Columbia University Medical Center, for a webcast review of the medical and administrative nuances of direct referral for screening colonoscopy. Direct referral is a growing practice that eliminates the pre-procedure consultation for average-risk men and women. This process reduces barriers for patients and improves their adherence to recommendations for colon cancer screening. It is increasingly accepted nationally as a referral strategy for appropriate patients
Learn more about the DOHMH guidelines for colorectal cancer screening and a new tool to increase screening in your practice. This tool promotes primary care assessment of patients for colonoscopies and is increasingly accepted by gastroenterologists and endoscopists in NYC.

Presentation on Vision Health We are very excited to invite you to a presentation given by John Crews, project officer from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), who will present on vision loss prevention, aging and disability. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet Mr. Crews and engage in discussion. We would also request that you forward this invite to your leadership, colleagues and staff as appropriate.
Mr. Crews is passionate about elevating the connection between vision loss and chronic disease, as well as raising awareness regarding secondary prevention of chronic disease and other issues for individuals who already have vision impairment. Mr. Crews will be presenting from 10:30 am to 12 noon on April 21st in Albany. The space for this is TBA and dependent on how many people plan to attend in person. We will also try to have a phone line available to provide that option to anyone not able to travel that day.

SEARCH: Become a Preceptor The SEARCH (Student/Resident Experiences and Rotations in Community Health) Program, coordinated by the New York State Area Health Education Center (AHEC) System, provides an opportunity for health centers to expose medical and other health profession students to the critical work of health centers. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration. Through SEARCH, community health centers will receive practice site support for each student placement during the four to six week rotation period. The program provides an opportunity for health centers to reach qualified students and to expose them to a career path of commitment to underserved populations. Through SEARCH, students may receive assistance with travel and housing reimbursement and centers receive guidance and resources through the professional AHEC network. News from Emergency Preparedness Emergency Preparedness Needs Assessment Survey Announcement: CHCANYS Emergency Preparedness Department is launching a Needs Assessment Survey today, Monday, April 19, with an expected return date of Friday, May 14. The purpose of this survey is to assess the emergency management needs of New York State's Community Health Centers. The results of this survey will allow CHCANYS to better understand health center needs, provide for these needs, and make available emergency management programs that help centers become active emergency preparedness partners.
Executive Order 29 has now expired! Executive Order 29, which declared a State disaster emergency and authorized suspension and modification of specified laws and regulations for the purpose of facilitating the timely distribution and administration of 2009 H1N1 influenza and seasonal influenza vaccine, expired April 17, 2010. Beginning on April 18, 2010, all modifications and suspensions of laws and regulations under the Executive Order will be no longer in effect, and affected parties must fully comply with existing New York State law. H1N1 Conference to be hosted by Medical Society of the State The Medical Society of the State is hosting an H1N1 conference entitled "Experiences from the Frontline: A Physician's Perspective on H1N1. This goal of this conference is to reflect upon the lessons learned by physicians in the aftermath of the H1N1 epidemic and how these lessons can be applied in handling future epidemics. The conference will be accredited with 5.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. This conference has tremendous potential to inform physicians of New York on how the H1N1 epidemic was handled by their colleagues. More information can be found by clicking here.

Pandemic Disaster Response Study Eager to Include Community Health Center Experiences The University of Kentucky Center for the Study of Violence Against Children is conducting a study examining psychosocial responses to pandemic. Researchers are particularly interested in the professional experiences of health care workers who provided immunization and treatment services during H1N1 and SARS. The study is focused on the psychosocial effects of pandemic on children and families, how pandemic affected the lives of health care workers and their families, and lessons learned or suggestions for improved planning, preparedness and response to future health emergencies to develop best practice guidelines and training modules. You may participate by taking an online survey, volunteering for an interview, or participating in a focus group. All participants will receive an incentive for their participation.
