CHCANYS UPDATE Region II Conference: Registration is Open New Jersey Primary Care Association (NJPCA) hosts this year's Region II primary care conference for health centers in New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The conference will take place June 1-3, 2010 at the Tropicana Casino & Resort in Atlantic City, NJ. The theme is Community Health Centers...A Pathway to Health Care Reform. SEARCH: Become a Preceptor The SEARCH (Student/Resident Experiences and Rotations in Community Health) Program, coordinated by the New York State Area Health Education Center (AHEC) System, provides an opportunity for health centers to expose medical and other health profession students to the critical work of health centers. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration. Through SEARCH, centers will receive practice site support for each student placement during the four to six week rotation period. The program provides an opportunity for health centers to reach qualified students and to expose them to a career path of commitment to underserved populations. Through SEARCH, students may receive assistance with travel and housing reimbursement and centers receive guidance and resources through the professional AHEC network. News from Policy/Advocacy CHCANYS UDS Database CHCANYS' advocacy work is supported by data, primarily, the UDS data you submit to HRSA. This is a reminder to send CHCANYS a copy of your 2009 UDS submission to HRSA. HRSA shares with CHCANYS the data you submit, but it is a lengthy process. In order to review and begin to use the data in a more time effective manner we created and initiated the CHCANYS UDS Database last year. We are asking that all New York State FQHCs share the data with us in the following manner:
Open your center's EHB site page where you can print out your UDS report.
On that page there is an option that allows you to download the submitted UDS data as an XML data file.
Choose this option and save the file locally on your computer. (Please use your UDS number and health center to name the file. For example, the file name for 2008 UDS data for a health center called "Community Development Health Center," with a UDS number 9121 would have a file name: H9121_Community Devel.xml)

The UDS data you share with CHCANYS will be used in exactly the same ways that it is currently used when HRSA sends the data file to us. We are bound by HRSA regulations not to release reports identifying individual health centers. All our data analysis is reported in the aggregate or "blinded."
News from Health Center Support Services Health Center Capital Needs Survey sent out Friday March 12, 2010 Under Capital Link's Cooperative Agreement with HRSA, Capital Link is required to periodically conduct an important market study to confirm and validate existing and future capital requirements. This information is used to inform HRSA of the current scope of health center capital needs and helps Capital Link to continue to identify possible sources of equity coupled with low-cost financing for health center projects.
In 2007, Capital Link conducted a similar study for the Access for All America Plan that was instrumental in estimating for lawmakers the immense need for capital by health centers to expand their operations. These estimates were reaffirmed by the results of the recent CIP and FIP application processes.

News from Clinical Quality Initiatives Improving Nutrition in Schools Workshop New York State Public Health Association presents Improving Nutrition, Physical Activity and Academic Performance in Schools, an interactive workshop on Thursday, May 6 from 8:30 am - 4:00 pm at the Holiday Inn in Saratoga Springs, NY led by staff from Cornell University Food and Brand Lab, Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center, New York State Education Department, and New York State Department of Health.
This workshop provides an overview of the Breakthrough Series Methodology as it applies to the priority area of physical activity and nutrition in a school setting. Numerous studies have shown a direct link between good nutrition, regular vigorous activity and increased academic performance among children. Local health department staff, school staff committed to improving health policies, school cafeteria managers, and community-based organizations partnering in a school setting are encouraged to attend.

2010 C5 Summit Each spring the C5 Coalition in conjunction with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Division of Cancer Prevention and Control, hosts a citywide meeting which brings together over 100 healthcare professionals: primary care physicians, GI doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners and many others from New York City and State. The Summit includes presentations from world-renowned experts on the progress of screening and treatment, legislation, medical research, and education and awareness of colorectal cancer. "Becoming an Asthma Educator" The New York State Public Health Association presents an in-depth course that includes didactic presentations, an interactive problem based learning case study and an up-to-date device workshop. This course is based on the 2007 NHLBI EPR-3 and the 2003 Global Initiative for Asthma Guidelines for the management of asthma. At the completion of this program, you will understand the trends in asthma prevalence, morbidity and mortality; the goals of asthma management; and you will be able to relate the risk factors that predispose patients to develop exacerbations and patho-physiology. The next four components of the class include assessment and diagnosis; control of factors that contribute to asthma; pharmacologic management; and education for a partnership - all related to the role of the asthma clinician and the educator. Finally, using problem-based learning, the class will discuss several case studies of patients with asthma.

News from Health IT NYS Medicaid Requires Facilities to Register the NPIs of their Attending (Servicing) Providers NYS Medicaid requires that clinics, hospital and other facilities register the National Provider Identifier (NPI) and licenses for all practitioners affiliated with the facility and might be included as an attending (servicing) provider on claims submitted by the facility. Soon, the NYS Medicaid Program will begin denying claims where the attending provider is not registered. You can register one of two ways:

NACHC NEWS Strategic and Business Planning Seminar NACHC is offering a one and a half day intensive seminar offering instruction regarding the critical analyses needed to develop a strategic planning case study. Seminar highlights include doing a comprehensive SWOT analysis through developing a community needs assessment and business plan. Tips on how to document and implement the strategic plan will be covered as well. The seminars are March 24-25 in San Francisco or August 10-11 in Chicago.
