National Health Center Week 2012 is Here! We hope that all of you are planning to participate in this year’s National Health Center Week festivities. Health centers across New York State and the nation will be hosting a variety of activities to spread the word about all the ways in which they serve their communities. Members of Congress, State Senators, Members of the Assembly, and local policymakers will visit health centers, participate in awards ceremonies, ribbon cuttings, health fairs and screenings, and celebrate the success of the community health center program. In addition, particular days have been designated to spotlight some of the specialized services offered by community health centers:

Farmworker Health Day - Thursday, August 9th

NACHC to Host Conversation with HHS Secretary Sebelius and HRSA Administrator Wakefield To kick off National Health Center Week 2012, the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) will host a telephone conversation with U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and HRSA Administrator Dr. Mary Wakefield on Monday, August 6th, at 12:30 p.m. EST. Participants will hear the latest news about the health center program and will also have an opportunity to ask questions directly.

New 340B Registration Deadlines, Webinar Announced The Health Resources & Services Administration’s (HRSA) Office of Pharmacy Affairs has announced new deadlines for registering new 340B covered entities and adding outpatient facilities and contract pharmacies to the 340B program. In addition, on August 14th from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m., the Bureau of Primary Health Care’s (BPHC) Office of Policy and Program Development will host a grantee enrichment webinar in collaboration with the Health Systems Bureau’s (HSB) Office of Pharmacy Affairs entitled, "The 3 Ps of the 340B Drug Program: Participation, Pricing and Program Integrity." Another Successful Year for CHCANYS’ Community HealthCorps The 2011-2012 CHCANYS Community HealthCorps (CCHC) program year is coming to a close. On Friday, June 29th, CCHC held their annual career day panel which featured Dr. Kameron Wells, Vice President of Clinical Affairs at CHCANYS; Stefanie Lindeman, Esq., Director of Operations at CHCANYS; Dr. Yvette Walker, Chief Medical Officer at Morris Heights Health Center; Candy Magaña, Quality Improvement Program Manager at CHCANYS; and Natasha Borrero, MPH, Assistant Director of the Institute for the Advancement of Community Health at Urban Health Plan. CCHC also held its first graduation ceremony, during which members were honored and recognized for their hard work and service throughout the year. The Keynote Speaker for this event was Grace Walfall, Director of the Montefiore School Health Program, and the member address was delivered by Alana Lopez.
CCHC would like to recognize its members for their dedication. Inspired by their experiences this year, many of them have decided to seek long-term careers in community health, highlighting the value of the program as a recruitment tool into the community health workforce pipeline. Many members will be going to medical schools, schools of social work, nursing schools, or have been hired on a full-time basis by community health centers or related organizations focused on providing services to underserved communities. Three members - Malaika Borni, Jenny Lopez, and Angela Woody - will be returning for a second year of service in the CCHC program.
Alana Lopez will be pursuing an MSW at Hunter's School of Social Work;
Debbie Ojeda has been hired as a Care Coordinator at Urban Health Plan;
Vera Hendrix will be attending Georgetown University School of Medicine in pursuit of her M.D.;
Adam Golden will be attending Tulane University in pursuit of his M.D. and MPH;
Mia Ragazino has been hired as a Health Educator at Bronx Aid Services;
Christopher Knapp will be attending the University of Minnesota, working towards his M.D.;
Shanelly Singh will be attending a post-baccalaureate program at Hunter College;
Lynchy Lezeau will be attending SUNY Downstate Medical Center in pursuit of an M.D.;
Malaika Borni will return to CCHC for a second year, serving the Callen Lorde Health Outreach to Teens Program as a Health Educator;
Elizabeth Abbs will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health in pursuit of her M.D.;
Jenny Lopez will be returning to CCHC for a second year as a Health Educator for the Montefiore School Health Program;
Daniela Zyskowski will be working as a Nutrition Assistant at Urban Health Plan;
Song Kim will be attending Tulane University in pursuit of an M.D.;
Yesenia Murillo will be working as a Community Health Organizer at the Montefiore School Health Program;
Winifred MacQuaye will be pursuing an MPA in Health Policy and Management at New York University.
CCHC congratulates all members for their year of service and wishes them the best in their future endeavors!

NYU College of Dentistry Offers Free Health Screenings Free screenings will be available on September 11, 12, and 13, 2012 at the NYU College of Dentistry, located at 345 E. 24th Street (corner of First Avenue) in Manhattan. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. No appointments are needed. Services include:
Free dental screenings;
Free toothbrushes and other personal oral health products;
Vouchers for free oral examinations and polishings;
Vouchers for free dental sealants for children 6 to 16 years of age;
Vouchers for free custom-made mouth guards for children 6 to 16 years of age;
Free oral cancer screenings; and
Free diabetes and blood pressure screenings.

Changes to NCQA Diabetes Recognition Program (DRP) Standards Since the Diabetes Recognition Program (DRP) was launched (DRP-1997), the measures have been periodically modified based on new evidence and improved performance of clinicians. Under the expert guidance of NCQA's Clinical Programs Committee (CPC), NCQA has released the 2012 DRP. Effective October 1, 2012, the specific changes include: strengthening scoring thresholds, including tobacco use in the DRP smoking measure; retiring the DRP pediatric program; and retiring the DRP patient survey. NYPATH Announces Western Region Kick-Off Training Program NYPATH (New York Promoting and Advancing Teen Health) will kick off their western region training program in Corning, New York on September 28, 2012. Presented collaboratively by the Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health at Columbia University, the University of Rochester and the Steuben Rural Health Network, the program will focus on key innovations in providing evidence-based adolescent-friendly reproductive health services. The training is designed for medical professionals, including physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, who provide health care services to adolescents.
