Training and professional development for the CHCANYS AmeriCorps team supplements the direct service experience and is designed to develop the key competencies of a health care provider. Through the training program members expand their awareness of professional opportunities in the health care field, gain a basic understanding of the pressing issues in public health, especially those concerning community health centers, and become effective educators and public speakers. Members also receive on-site training at their specific health center host site.

Members are provided with the practical tools and skills necessary to perform their service activities and build their readiness for careers in community health. Members also receive professional training that focuses on imparting skills that are applicable in any workplace environment.
Job Readiness and Placement
Members receive extensive career coaching throughout their year of service to support successful job searching and career decision-making. Members receive job placement services following their year of service to support their search for full-time employment in community health centers or other community-based health providers.
Educational Opportunities in New York City
Lastly, members are encouraged to take advantage of the educational opportunities in New York City. They regularly attend lectures at public health schools at universities, trainings at institutes and workshops at philanthropic organizations. In the past members received training on ‘Cross Cultural Communication in Asthma Education’ and attended a talk by Dr. Thomas Frieden, Commissioner for the New York City Department of Health.
The extensive training program, together with the job skills training and on-site experience during their year of service will give members the professional development and direction to start a career in community health and become the health care leaders of tomorrow.
